For the ones interested in a Trackback Tutorial and generally interested in the social media strategies and tactics, I suggest to watch Jack Humphrey’s video on trackbacks, it is excellent! This video is a great resource to learn this important feature in Wordpress, lots of Search engine optimization services usually don’t consider this aspect.

There are plenty of tutorials out there about trackbacks, but when it comes to implement this feature, a lot of us have to struggle a little bit to put all the pieces of the puzzle together, so, I thought it would be useful to include all of the important steps that have been confusing to me to accomplish this task.

Let’s get to the point:

The reason why we should implement this is to build relationships with other bloggers, and to get more traffic and links to our blog. Trackbacks are a way to notify a site when you have an entry in your blog that reference to them.

If your trackback will get approved, a short excerpt of your entry is going to be shown in the referenced site.

Firs locate the Thackback link

To find a blog to you can go to Google, and type your niche keyword and the word trackback and you will get blogs that allow you to do the trackbacks, but not all the ones that are shown in Google for your search are actually allowing trackbacks, you have to see and verify.

You are going to inspect the blogs you want to tracback and look for a necessary permalink provided on the post you want to reference to, you can’t just link the home page or you may not get approved.

Usually trackback links appear after the specific post, in the post page before the comments.

Most of the times the link is shown as a plain text link this way:

TrackBack URL for this entry:

http://www.seoservicesusa.com/trackback-tutorial-how-to-do-trackbacks.html/trackback

Other times it will be a hyperlink:

When the URL for the trackback is hyper linked, you will have to click on it to select “Copy link location…” or, you can highlight it and copy the link.

The exciting thing is that you are even allowed to reference more than a single blog entry, in this case each trackback URL has to be copied separately.

How do we know the blog we choose accept trackback? Some blogs show their trackback URL, others, even turn the trackback off. If you have doubts you may contact the author.

When Should You Send The Trackback?

Before you are ready to publish your post, you will tell WordPress to send a trackback notice. You have to paste the URL or URLs into the box next to where it says “Send Trackbacks To.” In WordPress 2.0 and higher, we can find this just below the box to do the Upload. If the box is not shown, you have to click on the “+” sign.

As soon as you have added the URL or URLs you want to trackback, when you hit the “Publish” button, the blog admin will be notified.
