The Title Tag Optimization is far the most important aspect of the on-page optimization, so, if you want to achieve good search engine rankings on your pages, you will have to optimize it really carefully. The title tag of a page is the text that appears at the top of the screen in the blue bar, humans note them mostly on the snippets of the page results, and search engines note them a lot. The way this tag will be optimized plays a crucial role in the way your site will perform in the SERP (Search Engine Result Pages).
Don’t Just Optimize The Home And The Landing Page
Many webmasters still make the mistake of paying attention just to the optimization of the home page title, or of the landing page of their site. Some people tend to use the same title tag for every single page of their site. It is instead essential to lay equal importance for all the title tags on every page of the web site and customize each one of them.
Using keywords
Each title tag has to have the right use of keywords in it. This will of course depend on the theme and content of the specific page. Using the same title for every page, not only makes it boring to read, but your site remains far behind as far as search engine rankings, for not having relevant titles. You need to use a combination of keywords on every title tag of every page.
Avoiding Redundancy
The title tag, has very limited space, and it is not considered a search engine friendly title, if it is longer than 80 characters, so, it is within this restricted space, that you need to give a good impression on search engine robots and to the users.
The search engine spiders, are constantly scrutinizing the Internet, looking for sites they can index, and refreshing the cache version of the sites they have already stored. So, do not make the mistake of filling up the title tag with redundant and unnecessary words like the name of your company, the name of the domain etc. These are all self explanatory. If the customer is on your website, the web page obviously deals with your company!
User Queries
Many times you find websites which have everything that you were looking for – just that you really had to go looking for them. Don’t want your site to be like these? Then make sure you use strategic keywords in your title tag so that every page on the site has great impact. A good suggestion is thinking more about the query that people type in the search box, than thinking to a normal title, I mean, a good title has to have them both in it, the query words, and it has to make sense as a title, you need to find a compromise for that.
Don’t make titles that compete in within you site or similar titles among your site, every page on the site has to be for a specific target query and topic. That way if your keywords are what users are searching for, your web page will rank higher for the important keywords of search engine results.
Don’t Use Stop Words
One problem many title have, is the use of stop words as part of their title tag. What is a stop word?? It is a word not relevant for the search engine like: the, of, if, and, make, and words like that. Stop words will count as a word, but will not be relevant and as a result your real keywords will loose strength. The thing is that now if we want to grab attention, we have to make attention grabbing titles, and a good title, to sound natural has to have stop words in it. To make a nice title you may use even buzzwords but you are not supposed to use them too much!
Don’t Use Too Many Buzzwords
The buzzwords are usually used to impress the audience with the pretense of great knowledge. One big mistake many webmaster make, is to use marketing buzzwords as part of their title tag. Why is this a mistake? Because we mostly want to use in our title tag the words that are going to bring traffic for the fact that are the words that people type them in the search box, this is why buzzwords don’t help with search engines, but again since after the robots humans are going to see your website, you have to compromise buzzwords and keywords the right way to be successful.
Search engine robots and spiders will rank your main site keywords lower for using too many buzzwords, and this is obvious for diminishing the prominence and the weight of the main key phrases. The only thing that will enable your website pages to rank higher is the right usage of keywords on the title tag. So make sure to stick to the relevant keywords instead of deviating from the topic but again, try to please the user too.
Prominence Of keywords In Title Tag
One other distinguishing factor, to create a relevant title tag and as a consequence, better ranking in the engines, is in the closeness in which the keywords get placed next to the first word of the title. So the closer the keywords are placed to the beginning of the title, the more prominence they will be considered by search engines.
This is why when choosing your title, you want to use your main keywords and you want to put them as close as possible to the beginning of the title, in order to perform a good on page optimization, and rank high for that particular keyword or key phrase.
The more words you use in your title, and the more you will lower the concentration of keywords of your title, more words will make our title more appealing and enticing, and finding the right balance can be very important too. Has been said from Mat Cutts (Google head engineers) your title tag has to be maximum five words and the secret is that it has to be good for search engines and for humans too.
Chances are if you have filled up your title tag with buzzwords and stop words your prominence will be minimum. You need to reach a compromise and make sure to stick to the relevant keywords for pleasing the engines but in the mean time you want to please the user too, if you want him to come back to your page. This little analysis about the Title Tag Optimization is just the surface of the issue that is a very important one.
