You would think that advertising Sucks, because it has yet to achieve its stride and has been disappointing for the low click rates it gets if compared to other kinds of advertisement, but in my opinion it will succeed. Why do I think so? Well, social media is a pretty different kind of advertising platform, compared to regular web pages and info oriented sites, so the two can not be compared.

The reality is different than it may appears: social media are the holy grail for advertisers, they do much better than television with the vantages of the Internet. The difference is that Social media are not just for teens, but are the future for any online business…

The top social media networks, the best 25 sites, in February of this year delivered more than 155 million visitors. The incredible number will shock you even more if you consider that 70 % of that traffic is coming from Facebook, MySpace and Classmates.com. If we consider YouTube also and Flickr we have another 60 million visitors totaling 215 million people viewing the social media each month.

The Internet is a platform for advertisers that can reach mass audiences and even better now that it is using video too. Internet users in USA, viewed more than 10 billion videos in Internet in December 2007 alone.

If you compare the Internet to television where in a 24-hour period an ad can be delivered to around 50 million viewers. Tv statistics are still impressive compared to the Internet, because the highest viewership day, Super Bowl Sunday, can count alone on an estimated 110 million views. Over an entire month there is little less than 200 million unique viewers.

News are that the Internet is not there yet, but advertising on social media it’s about quickly reaching the huge U.S audience. the good part is that the audience is more targeted compared on TV. Advertisers and business owners will have to realize sooner rather or later, that social media is a great way to reach audiences.

Business owners have to understand marketing and that doesn’t matter the click rate of advertising on Facebook, YouTube and MySpace the fact is they reach huge audiences and major advertisers like McDonald’s, Ford or Pepsi see the huge value in. Adwords advertisers will start to see that value too.

Television if it had to be clicked, would have an impressive low click through rate (CTR) if ad campaigns were measured over the long run, but since you don’t click the tv statistics are less accurate and this is an other down for TV.

People tune in and out of television like they usually do with the social media sites too. If we analyze some of the Compete’s figures we will be amazed to see that for any YouTube unique visitor 54 page views are generated. With Facebook, the unique visitor is able to create 564 page views. On MySpace the numbers are even more impressive and each person generates 1,110 page views.

The loyal audience is even large and habit addictive like the one of broadcast TV, it even hit the prime youth who are great spenders online and can be considered a very high value audience by big ad agencies and they know what they are doing. Ultimately, the advertisers have to value and understand the audience, it is not just a question of the clicks.
