The fundamental aspect of the on site optimization is the Keyword Research. To do it right you have to know your target audience and you have to know exactly how they search the product or services you are offering, you need to know the words and phrases they use! Consultants are often surprised that so many web page owner don’t take the time to dig deeper on their market.

Why Keywords are so crucial? Because they are the phrases that surfers enter in the engines to find information on the topic. To have a fare amount of targeted prospects entering your site, it has to have good rankings for the specific keywords related to your site.

Optimize your site for the and nobody will find you thorough the search engines. You don’t want to be in the first page of Google for terms nobody is looking for. I know of a Seo consultant that to impress clients shows them that he is on the first page of Google for terms nobody is looking for, he brags that his site is in the first page of Google for the key phrase “Hosting and mirroring” that is searched zero times per month, so he can appear a good Seo expert to clients and prospects that don’t know anything about it.

Here is the real issue: you don’t want to target keyword that are too difficult and you don’t want to waste your time and money promoting keywords that nobody is looking for either. If you want to get targeted visitors, you have to study your market and the keywords must not be too competitive, neither with too small number of searches per month.

The Right Keywords for Your Site

The first goal of a successful SEO expert is deciding the right keywords for your site and for your market. There are hundreds of tools and softwares to monitor keywords and a research tool can be more reliable than an other, but the person reading the data has to know what he is doing. While doing keyword research, you have to decide for the ones that don’t have too much competition and a reasonable number of searches.

4 Important Points About Keyword Analysis And Research:

1) it is better if you target keyword phrases of tree or four words,

2) each phrase will be the title of a specific menu don’t target more than one phrase

3) if your business is local, target your keywords to your area, or if is not local target by specific product

3) only use the keywords that are important to your web business

4) avoid keywords too competitive and keyword phrases that are too general.

Use only the keyword phrases that have been mostly used by surfers, because you have to use their words and be aware that they are not going to use yours. Web surfers generally use two to five or six words phrases when they search something, you will have to create articles or menus of your site using those phrases.

Just an example, if you offer a service like computer repair or carpet cleaner, you have to analyze how people search for that particular service and don’t target general key phrases “computer repair” or “carpet cleaner”, but you have to be more specific like “San Diego computer repair” or “carpet cleaner Vancouver”. Specific keywords always generate qualified and targeted traffic to your site and it increases your chances to get better business opportunities.

Most Common Mistakes In The Keyword Research

Single words never promote the site ranking nor are good to generate sales, for example you better avoid to target “gym” for a “Chicago Gym”. You have to know in advance how many web sites you are competing with to avoid popular keyword phrases and words or you’ll end up competing with too many web pages, and that can make it hard even to appear in the search engine.

It’s totally unrealistic to expect that a brand new web site like this one, could rank high on popular phrases like “Seo”. To give you an example of this web site, I had to target a keyphrase like “Seo Espert Usa” or since I didn’t want to be competing with 50 million web sites and commit to such volume of work I would need if I decided to target keywords like “marketing” or very competitive ones.

Established companies have the advantage of having been on the market for years, they have the link popularity, the page rank and all they need. Therefore it is a bad decision trying to rank in the search engine for broader or too general key phrases, but unfortunately this is a very common mistake on Keyword Research that people make all the time.
