Well, I should have said help your site to do well in Google, instead of saying “alt tags to help Google”, but it really doesn’t matter the way I say it.

This video is an easy explanation about how to be sure that Google will understand the images we have in our web site, we have to remember that images are a source of traffic because if we get an image in the first page of the for an important keyword for our site we would get a lot of traffic, just from an image.

For example, if we are in travelling business, and we sell tickets to Canada, it can be very beneficial to use a wonderful picture of Canada in our website. Why is this going to be a benefit? Well, if it happens that this nice picture gets in the first page of Google Images for the term picture of Canada, this can bring traffic to us. When people get to our image, it is pretty likely they will click on it to see the site where the image comes from, and there we are, an other good source for targeted free traffic!

In order to accomplish that, we have to optimize for the search engine, and Google engineer Mat Cutts explains how to optimize an image for best results, here is a nice short video:

In the video it was not very easy to understand the code we have to use for the images, so there it goes:

<img src=”http://www.yourwebsite.com/images/the_name_of_the_image.jpg” height=”100″ width=”100″ alt=”this is where we put the explanation of the picture 7 to 15 words long” />

The explanation in the alt text is going to help the spider to know what the picture is all about. Using this technique can help us getting some traffic and better ranking in Google. You can be sure about this being a Good piece of advice on alt tags, it comes directly from Google.
